                      **_ Position Paper for the World Health Organization_**

The Rise of Zika Virus and World Water Crisis are the topics before the World Health Organization Council. The United Arab Emirates is committed to work toward international progress and collaborative multilateral approaches to ensuring and improving public health and sustainable development in the following areas:

                                    ** I. Rise of Zika Virus**

The Zika virus (ZIKV) was largely disregarded due to its minor illness, until reports began to surface the recent outbreaks of 2013 in French Polynesia and of 2015 in South and Central America, associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and microcephaly in infants born to the infected mother. Carried out by Aedes Aegepty mosquitoes, the virus is in absence of antivirals and vaccine, leaving the case uncertain. Over 4500 new cases of microcephaly, a 20-fold increase in the number of cases in Brazil by early 2016 pressed World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency.

The United Arab Emirates has been declared void of any case of Zika virus. However, the concerning situation does not stop the UAE from taking immediate precautionary and protective measures. The UAE sets up the main center for tests of the infection in the Central Laboratory of Dubai and equips a laboratory to perform analyses of any suspected Zika cases. The UAE believes that in the absence of antivirals and vaccine to combat ZIKV, vector control is a practical strategy to limit new ZIKV infections. The UAE government and Ministry of Health have sent warnings to the population through common-sense approach that includes the use of long sleeve and light-colored clothing, mosquito net, and mosquitoes repellents when traveling to countries that have shown outbreaks.
