Excessive inequality in any society is harmful and poses a threat to global economy. Even though Australia's level of inequality is not as significant as in other developed countries, inequality in Australia is higher than the OECD average. My country is moving in the wrong direction. In a country that prides itself on its egalitarian traditions, the reality comes as a shock to many. In fact, there is a big gap in income and wealth between different social classes. Reports find that these gaps are consistently getting bigger. A great difference has been observed over the last 20 years. The wealth of those at the top has grown, while those in the middle or bottom has shrunk. The wealth of the top 20% richest people has grown by 28% from 2004 to 2012, while in comparison, the wealth of the poorest has increased only slightly by 3%. A perso...
