Uruguay, the second smallest country in the Latin America, with its population of 3.4 million people, has usually been overshadowed by its two larger neighbors Argentina and Brazil. However, Uruguay has proven to be the first when it comes to social reforms. Uruguay became the second country in Latin America to give women the right to vote. It has decriminalized abortion nationwide and it is the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex civil unions.
