Committee: High-level Political Forum of Sustainable Development (HLPF) Topic: Post-2015 Agenda Food Security Country: Kenya Food security, which refers to “a situation in which all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life” has always been a major issue for many developing countries. The emergence of corruption, poverty, lack of infrastructure, highly volatile production and low urban absorption capacity had led to a shrink in the food security in many nations. In some cases, the shrink appeared to be a catastrophic to the nations, leading to massive diseases and illnesses occur. While being an occasion to unsustainable development, Kenya realizes the potential drawback of the food security, and attempts to undertake basis resulting to low level of food security. By administering this problem remarkably, Kenya has signed numerous conventions and treaties, and also cooperated with other countries, opposing for high level food security. While being a developing country, much of the total employment is focused in the primary sector. The agriculture sector is the mainstay of Kenya’s economy. The sector directly contributes 24% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Approximately 45% of government revenue is derived from agriculture. And the sector contributes 50% of total exports of Kenya. The agriculture sector is also the largest in the employment rate, counting 60 per cent of total employment. The achievement of national food security is to be a key objective of the agricultural sector. In the recent years, starting from 2008, Kenya has been facing vast food insecurity problems. These are represented with a high proportion of the population having no access to food in the needed quantities and quality. Official estimates indicate over 10 million people being food insecure.
