Since the beginning of the 20th century, India has been implicated in Arctic affairs. The link between Arctic and India is not recent. In 1920, under British rule, India signed Svalbard Treaty which ruled upon Svalbard archipelago governance. The treaty regulates commercial and military activities and gives rules concerning environmental conservation. Willing to be more active in Arctic affairs India joined the Arctic Council. India obtain with China in 2013 the observer status at the Arctic Council according to the Kiruna Declaration.
