Following more than two century of Monarchy, Ethiopia finally became a democratic republic in 1991. It has been one of the founding members of the UN. Ethiopia has suffered series of famines and civil wars in the 1980s. Fortunately the country has begun to recover and has now the largest economy (by GDP) in east and central Africa.
