Topic A: Burundi

Having seen devastating effects of conflict in the Great Lakes region as evidenced by the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Japan is deeply disturbed by the ongoing crisis in Burundi. Since diplomatic recognition in 1962, Japan and Burundi has worked towards establishing bilateral economic relations and political cooperation. In the ensuing decades, Japan has provided financial assistance towards both development projects and humanitarian issues. In 2015, Japan provided an emergency grant assistance of about 3 million US$ for the elections in Burundi and about 3.68 million US$ for Burundian refugees. This was an effort towards maintaining the 2005 Peace process and assist the displaced populace.
