Topic A: Human Rights Violations in Burundi

The on-going and tragic conflict concerning human rights in Burundi has severely injured human and security rights. Multiple demonstrations broke out in April 2015 after Pierre Nkurunziza, the President, decided to seek a third electoral term. The killings by security forces and armed opposition groups and the political upheaval increased further in July, when Nkurunziza returned to power. Hundreds of people were killed and many more were arrested. In addition, civil society activists and journalists were shut down: private radio stations were closed and bank accounts of civil society organisations were frozen.
