Position Paper for the African Union
The topics for the African Union are China in Africa and the Inter-African Network. The delegation of Guinea-Bissau is proud to work with the other delegations to deal with them the problems afflicting the African continent.
I. China in Africa
The first topic addressed to the African Union commission regards the role of China in the African continent. Sino-African relations have been held since the last decades of the 20th century and the Chinese collaboration received both favorable and adverse responses from the overall African countries, generating mutual benefits as deep concerns about its social, environmental impacts.
Guinea-Bissau had first signed bilateral agreements with the People Republic of China between the years of 1974-1990 and then distanced itself from the Chinese sphere of influence, sustaining briefly the Taiwanese government. After the civil war ended in 1998, Guinea-Bissau decided to reestablish full diplomatic ties with the PRC, signing the “Joint Communiqué on the Restoration of the Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau" and joining few years later the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and starting a new era of collaboration and investments with Beijing .
