Position Paper for African Union

The topics for the African Union are “China in Africa” and “the Inter-African network”. The delegation of Eritrea is extremely proud to be able to work with its fellow delegations, as those are issues which affect the entire world.

I. China in Africa Since the long-desired independence of African states, an issue that was commonly seen as crucial for favouring economic development, was regional integration in the continent. This project, however, due to an internal political and economic fragility, seemed to be possible only thanks to China, which is playing a vital role in helping African leaders pursue their integration dream. Today the leading bond between the two countries is undoubtedly the so-called “China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC), which was established in 2000, and was declared to be a multilateral platform for collective dialogue and consultation. FOCAC’s main purposes were to expand cooperation of all kinds, and, in the long-run, it could provide a new basis for solving global poverty. The forum is a new and mutually beneficial cooperation model based on mutual respect among equals, and in most African states, it is believed to have the potential of being surprisingly advantageous for the two sides.
