Since its inception in November 1869 by the Suez Canal Company as a joint venture between France and Egypt, the Suez Canal has been an important landmark for purposes of trade as it granted ships a relatively short route between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The canal also served a crucial political role, allowing European colonialism to thrive by allowing more streamlined access to settlements and colonies. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the canal is now also a target of invasion and colonization.
