The world has taken great strides towards improving gender inequalities, however, girls and women are still victims of violence and discrimination all over the world. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are officially in force since 2016. These Goals – that are universally applied – aim at ending 17 problems concerning the world’s sustainable development, including the issue of gender inequalities. In 2011, the employment rate of women in the Austrian labor market was of 66.5%. Moreover, secondary education is more frequented amongst Austrian women by 73.4%.

Austria has been working on promoting the equal participation of women and men in political and public life, both at national and at local level. Being part of the European Union, in 2016, Austria adopted a sustainable development package which contained a set of priorities and strategies aimed at achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
