Topic 1: Violent Non-State Actors
Violent Non-State Actors (VNSAs) in various forms serve as a threat to the peace and stability of many countries. For example, the ongoing Somali Civil War involves rival warlords, clans, rebels and terrorists groups clashing with the internationally recognized Somali government for control over the countries’ territories. Government authority collapsed and for a long period of time, the internationally recognized government only had control of the nation’s capital, Mogadishu. Even today, Somalia still struggles with terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab and the government does not control all of its territory.
