Cape Verde is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. The nation is located off the coast of Western Africa, and has rich history as a Portuguese colony and is now an independent nation as of 1975. Despite a time of political turmoil, Cape Verde moves forward now belonging to a number of the same international organizations, including the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization fighting many issues that it faces such as drug trafficking and its history of the slave trade. Cape Verde follows a policy of non-alignment with regards to foreign relations as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which contains the majority of Africa, and aims to have cooperative relations with all friendly states.
