Belgium being a rather small country in size with a relatively large population of approximately 11 million inhabitants faces the problem of water scarcity. Even though water contamination is not a major problem within the country it regards adequate public health and living conditions as central aspects of human rights. Due to the high living standard and in particular a high meat-diet of the population there is a lot of pressure on the environment within highly developed countries. Even though there is a rather rainy climate, Belgium has a lower availability of water per person than most other European countries. This is a result of the pollution of water through the agricultural industry and the urbanization.
