Prostitution is illegal in the Republic of Tajikistan. However, buying sex is not a criminal act. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan have had civil wars and instability. It is the poorest country among the post-soviet states. Tajikistan has a liberal regime and a secular government. Therefore, it has become a popular destination country for sex tourism especially for Afghans.
