No country in peacetime has suffered more from nuclear testing than Kazakhstan or done more to champion the cause of disarmament. As an example of Kazakhstan’s commitment to a nuclear-free world, it was recalled that on 29 August 1991, from the first days of its independence, the country chose the path without nuclear weapons. This became possible because of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who made an historic decision to close the second largest nuclear test site in the world and abandon the fourth largest nuclear arsenal on the planet.
