Although it pursued research into weapons of mass destruction for more than thirty years, the South African government dismantled all of its nuclear weapons in the 1990s, and became the first state in the world in voluntarily doing so. The Republic of South Africa is thus supporting a multilateral agreement that would effectively prevent any risk of nuclear proliferation in Iran, and regrets President Trump’s decision to remove the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or to change the wording of the agreement.
