The exploitation of natural resources in conflict zones
The exploitation of natural resources in central and western Africa by militant groups has been a major issue regarding human rights violations and political instability. The civil wars that took place in Angola, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Congo that cost about 3.7 Million lives have been diamond-fueled and led to severe harm and loss of freedom for the local population. The wars have been leaving those countries vulnerable to violent rebel groups that utilize natural resources for funding themselves. Even though different approaches aiming to secure the international trade of these resources, especially diamonds, like the Kimberley Process and NGO´s like Global Witness have been established in the recent years, violence and oppression are not completely banned.
