The negotiations in this committee will heavily impact on the balance of power between Catholic and Protestant forces in Europe. Consequently, they will also shape Sweden’s future position in continental Europe as a whole. For now, the Kingdom of Sweden is an important player in the negotiations of this committee. The Swedish intervention of the Holy Roman Empire marked a major turning point of the war, as Catholic forces were driven back and some of the lost Protestant territory was regained. However, with the death of Gustavus Adolphus in the battle of Lützen and the defeat of the Swedish in Nördlingen, Swedish influence in what is now Germany is acutely threatened. Hence, the negotiations are an important forum for Sweden to tilt the scales back towards the better.
