Even though Belgium itself is a comparably small and landlocked country, it has been a strong colonial power and the legacy of its rulership still impacts the current politics and economic development. In the late 19th century, the geographical focus shifted and Belgium motivated, together with various other European nations, the Scramble for Africa.
