After the end of the Korean Empire in 1910, the Korean Peninsula itself experienced 45-year long colonialism under the rule of Japan. Their colonialism was especially harsh during the first 10 years, but due to nationwide protests, the Japanese rule allowed a limited amount of freedom of expression for Koreans.
