Japan’s own history pertaining to colonialism and imperial ambition is checkered, to say the least. Much like France and Belgium, the former colonial empire’s legacy still affects our own relations with our neighbors – particularly those in the Korean Peninsula. In this sense, it is pertinent to discuss how we have handled our own obligations with South Korea – a country which thanks to a combination of domestic and international investment opportunities has become one of the most successful economies in the asia-pacific region and the world as a whole.
