Malta is proud to be a member of the European Union (EU) for 15 years now. After an almost equal amount of time which was spent on preparing and negotiating the agreement, we have developed into a well-established member of the European Union.

Malta is supportive of the European enlargement and integration efforts and is committed towards the development of strict and clear criteria for accession. At the heart of any revision of the EU accession criteria must stand our values of democracy, equality, human dignity, the rule of law and freedom as referred to in Article 2 of the Treaty of the European Union (2012). Both, the representative of the European Commission, Karmenu Vella and the representative of the European Council, Joseph Muskat are convinced of the importance of the European Union and its openness for change and new members (The Guardian, 2018).
