Since 1963, in Cyprus there have been deep geo-political divisions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots increasing instability and tensions in the Mediterranean Sea. Reciprocal distrust and hostilities erupted in violent conflicts, which have required the deployment of United Nation Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in 1964. Furthermore, when the island was partitioned by a buffer zone called The Green Line, Greek Cypriots fled from their homes in the north taking refuge in the south and Turkish Cypriots similarly moved from the south to the north of the island in search of safety and protection.
