Position Paper - Advancement of Women

 

 

 

“No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens,” says Michelle Obama. The issue of at hand which falls under the topic the advancement of women can be seen as relevant as the committee from the united nations can view the problem and make recommendations and solutions to further empower women worldwide. The main position on the issue is a political block as the Huehuetenango declaration, concluded in 2011 with the first court of conscience on sexual violence against women in Guatemala. This court sanctioned, as a message of the absence of policies to prevent sex crime. The main elements of the problems at hand are as follows: according to the World Bank in 2013 Guatemala was among the group of low-medium income countries with a minimal GDP of USD $53,796 Million. We continue among the countries with the highest poverty index in Latin America and the Caribbean as 53.7 % poverty. We also have high levels of social conflict continued in our country today as a result of the exclusions of the past, a weak state presence and response, lack of legal certainty of land and property ownership.
