In Sierra Leone, crime continues to grow as the presence of drug trafficking, early marriage, illegal migration, and human trafficking spreads. Particularly, drugs in Sierra Leone are coming from outside countries and progressing to more dangerous crime. For example, in 2008, a private aircraft carried 700 kg of cocaine into the Freetown international airport. The immense poverty and unemployment rates, particularly among youth, lead to an increase in non-violent crimes, especially towards United States citizens. Seasonal rises in crime come from pickpocketing for wallets, phones, and passports and other opportunistic offenses for money occur daily with tourists. Early marriage, especially in West Africa, permits early pregnancy leading to young girls as moms, with no educational opportunities and even less economic opportunities. With no source of income spawning from early marriage, women often get involved with petty street crime to support themselves. ...
