Topic backgrounds
The federal republic of
Somalia has been facing political and societal troubles for a long time. The ongoing
conflicts are dominated by different clans and radical islamist groups such as Al-Shabaab,
a group that regularly carries out violent acts in the country, recruits young
Somalis for their troops and complicates or blocks the access of the population
to humanitarian aid. The federal government is not strong enough to combat
these issues on its own and the judicial system needs improvement as well,
since it does not always guarantee the enforcement of human rights. In addition
to these struggles, the country is confronted with environmental issues, such
as droughts, followed by a lack of water access and food. This especially effects
children.
The UN has previously intervened in the conflict several times and continuously
tries to improve the situation at hand...
