What is Peacekeeping?

In order to properly discuss the topic of it is essential to provide the definition of peacekeeping. According to Oxford dictionary it means “the active maintenance of a truce between nations or communities, especially by an international military force.

The first Peacekeeping Operation began in 1948. Its mission was in the Middle East to observe and maintain the ceasefire during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Since then, United Nations peacekeepers have taken part in a total of 72 missions around the globe, 14 of which continue today. The peacekeeping force as a whole received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988.

UN Peacekeeping is guided by three basic principles, which are: consent of the parties, impartiality, non-use of force except in self-protection and defense of the mandate.
