Addressing the Changing Ideas of Nation and Citizenship

MILMUN

The thirteen edition of MILMUN, the first and longest lasting Model United Nations conference in Italy, will be held from April 9th to 13th, 2018 in Milan.

THE THEME

We live in an increasingly interconnected world. One consequence of this phenomenon, which some call globalization, is above all at the center of many modern debates: the fading of national borders. Yet some regret this loss of national sovereignty as they feel power becoming more removed, and this regret fuels a new wave of nationalism that we see today.

On a parallel track, the fading of national borders also weakens the feeling of citizenship. People often live in different countries from where they were born, and sometimes they will have studied in yet other ones. In this context, the concept of citizenship can no longer be defined in the traditional sense.

It is clear, therefore, that the related concepts of nation and citizenship are key in understanding and shaping our world today.
